So, you've got a machine you've had for a few years. Your
friend says you ought to replace it, but you're unconvinced.
You think, "my computer is still fast enough to do all the
things I need it to." This is the heart of advice I often gave to
family, friends and clients. No computer or software is
obsolete if it still performs the tasks you need it to in the time
required. But this standard requires a bit of modification.

In these days of the Internet, the WWW, worms, trojan
horses, and spy ware things are very different. Computing
speed may still not be reason to replace a desktop system,
but the software must be up to date!

The operating system may be functioning fine, but keep up
with patches and upgrades. Buy and install some quality
anti-virus software. Set up the scheduled virus scanner and
enable the automatic download of fresh virus definition
files. Your anti-virus software is only useful if it know what it
is looking for and if you scan often.

I also advise users to install a firewall and anti-spy ware.
Think of these a good lock on your back door and a security
guard who looks in all the dark corners to find if any hijackers
have managed to get aboard and hiding inside your trusting
desktop computer.

Remember to back up your important data. Even with all the
precautions, your system may get infected. If you have to
restore the system, you don't want to have to retake all those
photos or type all those spreadsheets over again, do you?
Burn CDs or get one of these new external hard drives.

Lets be careful out there people!

Have you got an older computer that creeps along like a sloth? Do all your friends and family tell you to spend the cash to buy a new, updated, faster machine?
Before you spend that hard earned cash, be sure that you're doing the right thing? Is it slow hardware you need to replace or is it a digital bug embedded inside the windows on your virtual world that is causing your woes?
It has been estimated that 90% of personal computers have atleast one instance of Spyware or Trojan Horse software hidden inside. Don't let these bugs steal your data or bandwidth. Get some disinfectant to clean out your system and a good set of locks to put on the door ways to the information superhighway.
Everybody needs up to date virus protection, anti-spyware, and firewall software running on their machine.
Protect yourself and have more fun without losing your shirt.
So, you say to yourself, "I have looked for spyware and trojans and thankfully, I don't have that problem." So then perhaps you do need a new machine.
There are seemingly infinite choices out there for a computer buyer to select from. Which manufacturer is going to get your hard earned cash? Where ya going to go to buy that new screaming machine?
